Oklahoma County Special Judge Stephen P. Alcorn resigned Tuesday after eight years on the bench to take a job out of state.

Alcorn, 46, is a former prosecutor who was appointed special judge in 2004.

He has accepted a position as city attorney but declined to disclose the city or state where he will be working because his hiring has not been announced.

His last day is March 6. The county's 15 district judges will appoint his replacement.

“Oklahomans are much more interested in your potential than where you come from,” said Alcorn, a native of Austin, Minn. “I don't think there are a lot of other states that would have given me the opportunity.”

Before law school, Alcorn served as a tank commander in the U.S. Army. He fought in Operation Desert Storm and was awarded the Bronze Star.

After graduating from Oklahoma City University School of Law in 2000, Alcorn became an assistant district attorney in Oklahoma County and specialized in narcotics cases. He left the district attorney's office in 2004 and went into private practice.

In October 2004, he was appointed special judge and spent six years presiding over juvenile cases. Alcorn spent the past two years handling felony criminal dockets, including preliminary hearings.

Assistant District Attorney Clayton Niemeyer said he will miss Alcorn and his low-stress courtroom.

“He's one of those judges it's a pleasure to work with,” Niemeyer said. “I hate to see him go.”
