Area residents who would like to find out more about how to keep their heart healthy are invited to attend the “Heart-Smart Living” workshop at the Oklahoma County OSU Cooperative Extension Service Thursday, February 28, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
The “Heart-Smart Living” workshop is sponsored by Oklahoma Home and Community Education groups in Oklahoma County in honor of American Heart Month this February and will feature healthy-heart, diet- modification tips, exercise requirements and symptom awareness and prevention.
“Getting the right kind of information about important subjects like heart disease and stroke awareness can be vital to a person’s good health,” commented LaDonna Dunlop, a Registered Dietitian and the Family and Consumer Sciences Educator for the Oklahoma County OSU Cooperative Extension Service. “The more we know about heart disease and stroke, the more we can do to prevent it.”
Dunlop will join with Shaun Steen, a Fitness Physiologist with the Mercy Fitness Center, to teach the workshop. Steen will offer a hands-on session with participants that will help them discover how easily a fitness regime can be adapted to any fitness level.
“The statistics for both heart disease and stroke in Oklahoma show that they are prevalent across the state,” Dunlop stressed. “Oklahomans need to find out as much as they can about these topics so they can protect themselves and insure their good health.”
Our diets can have a big impact on our good health, Dunlop indicated, which is one of the reasons that diet and exercise are often people’s “first defense” against heart disease and stress.
Diet modification, weight control, menu planning and other aspects of a healthy diet will be part of the program.
“We want everyone who is interested in these subjects or just interested in staying healthy to plan to attend this event,” Dunlop said. “It’s hard to protect yourself against these diseases when you don’t know very much about them.”
The “Heart-Smart Living” is offered free of charge to the public. Please call the Oklahoma County OSU Cooperative Extension Service at 713-1125 for more information.
