What is the American Legislative Exchange Council?

The American Legislative Exchange Council was founded in 1973 by former President Richard Nixon and is described on its website as a "think tank for state-based public policy issues and potential solutions."

The tax-exempt nonprofit boasts a membership directory of over 2,000 state legislators from all 50 states who gather at conferences to discuss policy and share legislation that supports free enterprise, privatization and families.

At least 25 Oklahoma legislators are current members of the group. Gov. Mary Fallin, Sen. Jim Inhofe and former Sen. Don Nickles have been members in the past.
