Health clinic

• 1987: The first Emerson Alternative High School health care clinic opens. It is called the Teen Parent Clinic and is staffed by the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

• 1988: The clinic adds a mentoring program for the teen moms.

• 2009: State legislators cut about $141,000 in funding that paid for the Emerson health care clinic and a similar project in Tulsa. The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center pulls its staff. Emerson advocates ask for funding from the school district, the community and the Legislature. The clinic closes.

• 2010: Students, educators and advocates ask for a clinic to be built into the MAPS renovation of Emerson during community meetings about the design plans. MAPS officials say the clinic can't be added in to construction plans because it's not a current feature of the school.

• 2012: Ground is broken for MAPS renovation of the school.

• 2013: The Oklahoma City School Board approves a memorandum of understanding with the nonprofit organization Variety Care to reopen the clinic.
