STILLWATER — Bobby Reid and Mike Gundy have been connected by a viral YouTube video clip for more than five years.

Now, they're co-workers.

Reid, the former Oklahoma State quarterback who was the subject of the column that sparked Gundy's infamous “I'm a man! I'm 40!” rant, has joined the Cowboy football staff in a non-coaching role, a school official confirmed to The Oklahoman Monday evening.

Reid's hiring was first reported by GoPokes.com. Reid's specific role was not revealed.

Reid arrived in Stillwater as a highly decorated, dual-threat quarterback and became the full-time starter as a sophomore in 2006. But he lost his job to Zac Robinson early the following season, prompting a game day column in The Oklahoman suggesting Reid's soft mentality and inability to play through injuries had caused the benching.

Gundy then used his postgame press conference following a victory over Texas Tech to go on a tirade about the piece.

“Don't write about a kid that does everything right, that's heart's broken and then say the coaches said he was scared,” Gundy said. “That ain't true!”

Following the 2007 season, Reid transferred to Texas Southern. In an ESPN the Magazine story that ran in April 2008, he said Gundy's rant “basically ended my life.”

“Honestly, the way I took it, I felt like it was all a front,” Reid said in the story. “That it was all a big show. It didn't feel genuine.”

But last summer, Gundy told the Tulsa World that he and Reid had recently met to patch up their relationship.

“He wanted to come and sit down with me and clear the air,” Gundy said.
