Residents who want to learn how to plant and grow beautiful, nutritious vegetables are invited to attend a “Vegetable Gardening” Workshop Thursday, March 14, at the Oklahoma County OSU Cooperative Extension Service.

The workshop, which will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m., will focus on helping gardeners learn how to prepare their soil for vegetables, how to choose varieties that will do well in Oklahoma’s climate and how to maintain their garden once they’ve planted it.

“We focus on providing our gardeners with the latest information from university-based research,” said Ray Ridlen, OSU Extension Horticulture educator. “Putting new research to work for you really can help increase garden yields and decrease the overall work load associated with gardening.”

Even experienced gardeners should be able to learn from this workshop, Ridlen indicated, since it focuses on new information within the industry.

“Gardening can be one of the most rewarding experiences there is, but it can also be frustrating if your time and effort doesn’t add up to production.  That’s where education comes in,” Ridlen added.

The “Vegetable Gardening” workshop will also be offered Thursday, March 7, at the Warr Acres Library from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and at the Midwest City Library Tuesday, March 19, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

All of the seminars are offered free to the public.  For more information about “Vegetable Gardening” or other horticulture classes offered by the OSU Extension Center, contact the Oklahoma County office at 713-1125.
