Special license plates support research

Regarding “Special license plate sales hit a bump in the road” (Tulsa World, Feb. 18): I take issue with the statement, “Special plates showing support for research in pancreatic cancer ... generated just $220 ... in 2012.” The “MVD Apportionment of Statutory Revenues for Fiscal year 2011-2012” shows the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund with $2,920, not $220 as reported. I know for a fact there were more than 145 pancreatic cancer plates sold for the year 2012.

From the cost of the pancreatic research tag/plate, $20 goes into that research fund, which provides seed money to continue research being done in Oklahoma. That fund is added to every year with the renewal of each tag/plate. The only advertising for a research plate is when it's seen on a vehicle. Few even know it exists. Some tag agents don't even know all the plates available to motor vehicle owners.

If you have one of these plates, renew it now and help increase the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. If you don't but would like to donate, you may do so by sending a donation to Oklahoma Department of Health, Accounting Services, P.O. Box 268823, Oklahoma City, Okla., 73126-8823. Include a brief note indicating your desire to have it deposited in Fund 242, the Pancreatic Cancer Research License Plate Revolving Fund.
