College softball/baseball: OU softball team remains undefeated

Sooners hold off California-Riverside 5-2. Lauren Chamberlain hits seventh homer of the season.

Oklahoma remained unbeaten on the softball season Friday, beating California-Riverside 5-2 at the Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.

Lauren Chamberlain hit a team-best seventh home run, and Brittany Williams added three hits and two RBIs as the Sooners improved to 13-0. OU played Nebraska in a late game Friday night.

Starting pitcher Michelle Gascoigne struck out 11 and walked two in 42/3 innings. Keilani Ricketts took over in the fifth inning and blanked Riverside (8-3) the rest of the way on no hits, no walks and four strikeouts.

SOONERS TOP HAWKEYES

Preseason All-American Dillon Overton threw eight shutout innings, and Max White provided two RBIs on Friday as Oklahoma beat Iowa 3-1 at the Kleberg Bank Classic at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. Overton limited the Hawkeyes (1-3) on seven hits, no walks and nine strikeouts. Robert Tasin allowed a run on two hits in the bottom of the ninth inning, but he notched his second save.

OU (7-0) infielder Jack Mayfield added three hits and scored a run.

The Sooners will play tournament host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6 p.m. Saturday.

COWBOYS PLAY TWO

Oklahoma State has a baseball doubleheader scheduled Saturday against New Jersey Institute of Technology at Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater. The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The second game will start approximately 30 minutes after the first. The Cowboys (4-1) and Highlanders (0-2) will play a single game at noon Sunday.
