Bills about A-F begin moving through Oklahoma Legislature

Oklahoma legislators have filed several bills related to the new A-F school evaluation system.

Measures propose changes

to A-F grading system

State lawmakers have proposed several bills related to the new A-F school evaluation system. Here are some of the bills proposing the most significant changes.

Senate Bill 183

Author: Sen. Susan Paddack, D-Ada, and Rep. David Perryman, D-Chickasha.

Proposal: The state will create an oversight committee to create a “research-based formula to implement the A-F grading system.”

Status: Assigned to the Senate Education Committee.

SB 468

Author: Sen. Sean Burrage, D-Claremore.

Proposal: Any school district with a website will be required to post its A-F district and school site report cards online.

Status: Assigned to the Senate Education Committee.

SB 635

Authors: Sen. Clark Jolley, R-Edmond, and Rep. Jason Nelson, R-Oklahoma City.

Proposal: Student academic growth measurements and dropout rates will be cut from the A-F formula. More factors will be included when calculating elementary school and middle school grades. The state Board of Education will establish a fair testing sample size.

Status: Waiting to be heard by the full Senate.

House Bill 1036

Author: Rep. Dennis Casey, R-Morrison.

Proposal: The state will create an Oklahoma School Accountability System Validation Task Force, which would evaluate whether the A-F system is accurate and fair.
