EDMOND — A site plan for a three-story apartment and retail building on the northwest corner of Jackson and Campbell streets was approved this week by members of the Edmond City Council.
City Planner Bob Schiermeyer said 30 apartments will be on the upper floors with a retail store on the bottom floor of the 44,797-square-foot building being constructed by Turner and Co.
The property is zoned downtown residential district, which allows multifamily dwellings with no density limitations except they do have to meet the commercial site plan standards.
At least three houses on the property will be torn down.
Plans call for 77 parking spaces, which is more than city code requires.
Parking in the area often is congested because of the location close to the University of Central Oklahoma.
Brenda Miller, 217 E Edwards St., called parking in the area atrocious.
“I can't even get in my driveway,” she said. “I have lived there 20 years, and the last year it has been miserable.”
She also accused a fraternity of operating illegally in her neighborhood.
“There are all kinds of trash and crap,” Miller said. “Someone waltzed into my home and stole my purse.”
Clay Coldiron, with Turner and Co., said the developers realize parking in the area is difficult.
“We will post signs that it is private parking,” Coldiron said. “Hopefully, people will follow the signs.”
Developers plan to include seven bicycle racks. At the request of Councilwoman Elizabeth Waner, Coldiron offered to look at including additional racks.
