Oklahoma educators honored

Five educators have been honored with the Medal of Excellence by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence.

The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence has named the five winners of the 2013 Oklahoma Medal for Excellence.

The winners will be recognized May 18 at the 27th annual Academic Awards Banquet. Each winner will receive $5,000.

The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence is a nonprofit organization that promotes public education in Oklahoma.

The award categories and the corresponding winners are as follows:

Elementary school teaching: Jill Edwards Steeley, a second-grade teacher, Central Elementary School, in Coweta.

Secondary school teaching: John Waldron, a social studies teacher, Booker T. Washington High School, in Tulsa.

Regional university/community college teaching: Ruth Askew Brelsford, a speech and theater professor and department chair and Honors Program coordinator at Eastern Oklahoma State University, in Wilburton.

Research university teaching: Richard A. Bunce, a chemistry professor at Oklahoma State University, in Stillwater.

Elementary or secondary school administration: Cathy Burden, superintendent of Tulsa Union Public Schools.
