Severin had not played during the playoffs after suffering a torn ACL in the regular-season finale. But she had a few minutes left in her knee to attempt to be the hero.
And it nearly worked.
But after she missed the game-tying free throw and game-winning 3-pointer, No. 8 Erick escaped with a 41-40 upset for the fifth-ranked Tigers at Carl Albert High School.
“Coach (Kale) Pierce did a good job of putting Severin in there at the end,” Janz said. “It kind of caught us off guard.”
Erick now plays Shattuck in the semifinals Friday at 10:30 a.m. in State Fair Arena.
With the game tied at 39, the Bearcats (23-8) came up with a few big shots in the final two minutes, sealing the victory, but not before some drama.
Timberlake (23-4) had a chance to take the lead with about 28 seconds remaining until Shyli May intercepted an inbound pass, allowing her to make the decisive free throw with 14.7 seconds remaining.
