Police were called to the scene regarding reported narcotics activity. Officers witnessed a drug deal and approached the person who made the sale, Capt. Dexter Nelson said.
The man was in his car. Officers in unmarked cars drove toward the suspect, showing their badges. An officer on foot approached from the side and was hit by the man's car as he attempted to drive away.
“That officer then fired on the man in the car, killing him,” Nelson said. “A car can be used as a weapon anytime you are standing in front of a car and someone comes toward you.”
The officer was treated for minor injuries at the scene, he said.
Police said they are interviewing multiple witnesses to the incident.
Nelson said the officer who shot the suspect has been placed on paid administrative leave, and more officers might be put on leave pending the investigation's outcome.
