The school board has named Cara Jernigan as principal of Frontier Elementary School, scheduled to open in August.

Jernigan has served as West Field Elementary School principal since 2008 and will continue to do so until summer.

“While I am truly honored to be named the first principal of Frontier Elementary, it is bittersweet for me. For the past five years, I have been devoted to the students, families and staff at West Field Elementary. I have enjoyed getting to know each of them and watch them grow,” Jernigan said.

School officials have not said who will replace Jernigan at West Field.

Board members also during their Monday meeting approved the attendance boundaries for Frontier Elementary. Students from West Field Elementary, John Ross Elementary and Washington Irving will attend the new school.

Frontier Elementary, at 4901 Explorer Drive, will be the district's 16th elementary school. The attendance boundaries will be Santa Fe on the east, Danforth on the south, Pennsylvania to the west and Covell on the north.
