Oklahoma State basketball notebook: Iowa State wins battle of wills

by John Helsley Published: March 6, 2013

OSU entered Wednesday night's matchup with Iowa State as the Big 12's second-ranked scoring defense, allowing just 61.2 points per game.

The Cyclones were the league's top scoring team – and the nation's No. 4 scoring offense – at 79.7.

So something had to give.

This time, it was the Cowboys, who surrendered a season-high point total in an 87-76 loss at Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State shot 51.9 percent from the floor, scored inside and out and again proved difficult to handle with a spread offense that forces teams to cover every inch of the floor.

“They're very good at what they do,” said Cowboys guard Markel Brown. “Everybody on the court can shoot 3s, so they're able to step out and do ball-screen actions and get their big men into the plays to make 3s. They do a very good job of running their plays.”

The Cowboys close the regular season Saturday, hosting Kansas State in a game that is officially a sellout.

K-State sits 14-3 and tied for first place with Kansas in the Big 12 standings. The Wildcats beat OSU in the first meeting, the conference opener for both schools, 73-67 on Jan. 5.

OSU officials are recommending that fans arrive early for the 12:30 pm game, which is also Senior Day. Student season-ticket holders will be allowed to enter the arena at 11:10 am. The doors will open 30 minutes earlier than normal, at 11:30 am. The game will also be televised by the Big 12 Network.
