Some days just don’t go as planned. And, this was one of them. Because of a winter storm dropping freezing rain over the city, half of our assignments were cancelled today.

Then there was a phone call from our features department. “I’m in the lobby with people from SeaWorld and they brought penguins. Can we bring them up to the photo studio?”

“Sure,” I replied and asked staffer Chris Landsberger to grab a camera. Neither of us knew what to expect. What kind of photo? Just the animals or with people too? Our people? Their people? How many animals? What kind of animals?

What happened was totally unexpected and fun!

After quick introductions, the handlers uncrated two penguins and carried them into the studio. Once they set them down is when the fun began.

Our studio isn’t fully enclosed; the back is open into our office area. After getting what shots Chris needed, the handlers let the penguins walk around. Like on the whole floor. For almost 30 minutes. As you might expect, word started to spread throughout the floor, then to other floors. Imagine stepping off the elevator and seeing a penguin walk past!

I had decided when they first arrived to shoot photos and video of Chris’ photo shoot. I then proceeded to follow them as they walked around the floor, with one making a stop on my desk.

They also brought an American alligator and a three banded armadillo.

Some days don’t go as planned. They are much better!

And this video, too!
