Deployment

by Sarah Phipps Modified: April 18, 2013 at 11:58 am •  Published: September 16, 2012

On Sunday, I shot pictures of the Oklahoma Aviation Command mobilization ceremony for Detachment 1, Company C, 2-149th General Support Aviation Battalion in Lexington, Okla. The families gathered in the air hanger at the Army Aviation Support Facility to watched their loved ones march in formation.

There was not a dry eye in the house.

Afterward, the families gathered outside to watch their soldiers fly away in helicopters. For Kelly Pindel it was the third deployment for her husband, but it did not make watching him fly away any easier.

“It is a very emotional moment, it is a proud moment. It’s a sad moment. I am going to miss him, miss all of them,” she said.

After watching the formation of the helicopters disappear into the overcast sky, she reflected.

“It is a sense of pride. It’s one last look … just goodbye”

This was not the first time I have shot a mobilization ceremony at the Lexington facility. Four Years ago on Sunday, June, 8, 2008, I took a picture of David Tillman hugging his 7-year old boy, Patrick. Today, I shot pictures of Staff Sgt. David Tillman saying goodbye to the same son, a little older and wiser at the age of 11.
