Class 6A girls basketball: Scoreless quarter dooms Edmond Memorial vs. Bixby

A scoreless quarter wound up being too much for Edmond Memorial to recover from as Bixby beat the Bulldogs 41-26 to open the Class 6A girls state basketball tournament Thursday afternoon.

Bixby (20-7) advances to play the winner of Thursday afternoon’s Norman North/Tulsa Union game at 9 a.m. Friday at ORU’s Mabee Center.

Edmond Memorial’s season ends 19-10.

“The emotion of the game started getting to us a little bit in the fourth,” Edmond Memorial’s Jenny Roy said.

Stevi Parker led Bixby with 15. Allie Alvstad added 12.

Alvstad gave the Spartans offensive punch inside on a night when Christina Devers, who normally averages 20.4 points per game, wasn’t at the top of her offensive game.

“We knew we were going to have to rely on her inside,” Bixby coach Melody Stewart said. “That kid, she’s a D-I softball player but I’ve told her for four years now she could play both at that level if she put her mind to it.

“She was a big help to us today for sure.”

Bixby took control in the second quarter, holding Edmond Memorial scoreless to go into the break up by 10.

But the Bulldogs stormed back in the third, helped by an Andee Decker 3-pointer early in the quarter that helped Memorial pull within three.

Several times, the Bulldogs had a chance to cut the Spartans lead even further but couldn’t, including a final shot at the buzzer to end the third.

Bixby then regained control quickly in the fourth, with an 11-0 run fueled by five points from Parker, the Spartans’ star who missed a good portion of the season due to injury.

Andee Decker led Memorial with 8 points. Roy added 10 rebounds.
