Putnam City defeated Tulsa Union 54-51 in the first round of the Class 6A boys basketball tournament on Thursday.
Dexter Dean, who averages 5.5 points, carried the Pirates in the final period. David Bush led Putnam City with 16 points and nine rebounds while Boyce added 14 points.
