— Despite five new starters and the growing pains that always accompany them, the Bishop McGuinness boys basketball team is right back where it was a year ago.

The No. 1-ranked Irish rallied past Chickasha for a 50-40, Class 5A semifinal win at the Mabee Center, and will play Tulsa Memorial for their second straight state championship Saturday at 1:45 p.m.

“Whenever you come to a school like McGuinness, you’re expected to play for championships,” said senior David Love, who led all scorers with 16 points Friday.

“Just to come back (to the title game) for a second time is so special. We’re so excited.”

The Chicks led McGuinness 19-13 at halftime, and 34-30 after the third quarter.

Senior Greg Roberts hit a 3-pointer with 5:54 left in the game, though, to give the Irish a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

“We made a commitment that we were going to work hard and try to get to tomorrow,” said Irish coach Tondrell Durham. “There were some bumps along the way, but we play as a team. I’m so proud of this group of guys.”

Chickasha, which finishes its season with a 17-11 record, was making its first state tournament appearance since 2004.

Senior Joey Sylvester led Chickasha with 15 points, and senior E.J. Golightly added 14.
