Class 6A boys basketball: Midwest City beats Putnam City to reach title game

TULSA — Midwest City withstood Putnam City’s furious fourth-quarter rally Friday night, beat the Pirates 57-50 and advanced to Saturday’s Class 6A boys basketball state championship game against Edmond Memorial.

The Bombers and Bulldogs split their two earlier meetings this season. Edmond Memorial handed Midwest City (28-1) its only loss.
“It’s gonna be a challenge,” said Midwest City coach Dewayne Bradley. “It’s gonna be difficult with them. But we’re there. We haven’t played a perfect game yet. Tomorrow would be a nice time to make that happen.”
Friday, the Bombers led 14-9 after the first quarter, and took what seemed like a comfortable 30-12 lead into halftime.
Putnam City, though, opened the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run to pull within striking distance. The rally ultimately fell short, and the Bombers advanced to their ninth state-title game in school history.
“In the first half, they were trapping and we were just moving the ball and attacking,” Bradley said. “We just got a little passive. They got real aggressive, and got some steals and made some shots.”
Junior Kesean Brown led Midwest City with 15 points. The Pirates (27-3) were led by senior David Bush’s 18 points and six rebounds.
Midwest City won the last of its four state championships in 2007, and finished runner-up in 2010 and 2011.
