Baylor coach Kim Mulkey expressed her love for the Big 12 following Sunday's Big 12 Tournament semifinal victory against Oklahoma State, saying she hopes every team from the league that earns an NCAA Tournament berth finds success.
And after needing to hold off a Cowgirl rally in a 77-69 victory, she praised that squad in particular.
“You've got a team in Oklahoma State that I'm pulling for,” she said. “I think (coach) Jim Littell has done an outstanding job, and he has very good players that play well together.”
COALE GIVES SUCCINCT BREAKDOWN OF BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
As Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale's postgame press conference was winding down following the Sooners' 79-60 loss to Iowa State, she was asked to give a scouting report on the championship matchup between Baylor and the Cyclones.
Coale was, in a word, brief.
“Baylor's really good. Iowa State's really good,” she said. “Ought to be a great Big 12 game.
“Sorry, not where my mind is right now.”
LASHAWN JONES LOGS KEY MINUTES FOR COWGIRLS
Littell said following Saturday's quarterfinal win against Texas Tech that post Kendra Suttles had been the Cowgirls' best player over the past month.
But Sunday against Baylor, she struggled, finishing with zero points on 0-of-9 shooting while getting at least four shots blocked by Brittney Griner.
With those troubles, plus Lindsey Keller still out with injury, Littell had to turn to LaShawn Jones. The 6-3 sophomore logged 17 minutes, her highest total since playing 22 against Baylor on Jan. 6.
“We don't need anything fancy out of her,” Littell said. “We just need her to defend and rebound and screen. For the most part, I thought she did that pretty well.”
*Sunday's total attendance was 7,229, the best for the Big 12 Women's Basketball Tournament's semifinal round since 2009 in Oklahoma City (9,203).
*OU's loss to Iowa State was its first defeat on a neutral floor (3-1).
*The Sooners' Whitney Hand underwent a rapid costume change following both of OU's games, switching from her uniform to attire appropriate for the camera. She's been an analyst for the Big 12's webcast, breaking down all the tournament's games with conference insider Wendell Barnhouse.
