Oklahoma State football: Cowboys hire Tim Duffie to coach defensive backs

Oklahoma State moved quickly to fill its recently vacated spot on the coaching staff, announcing Monday the hiring of Tim Duffie as a defensive backs coach.

Duffie spent the 2012 season as the secondary coach at Wake Forest and the previous four seasons as the cornerbacks/secondary coach at Colorado State, where he was the school’s primary recruiter in Texas.

Duffie replaces Jason Jones, who left OSU after five seasons last week to become the cornerbacks coach at Mississippi.

Under Duffie’s watch, Colorado State ranked 14th in the nation in passing defense (179.6 yards per game) in 2011.

A former Texas Tech player and Jefferson, Texas native, Duffie began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at UTEP and then spent the next six seasons coaching the Miners’ linebackers and safeties. His pupils during that time included linebacker Robert Rodriguez, the 2004 WAC Defensive Player of the Year, and linebacker Thomas Howard, a second-round NFL Draft pick.

The broader defensive backs coach title for Duffie gives the Cowboys some flexibility with him and current safeties coach Van Malone. Malone coached cornerbacks at Western Michigan in 2004 and at Texas A&M from 2006-07 and coached the entire secondary at North Texas (2005) and Tulsa (2010-11).
