St. Patrick's Day means no blarney celebrations

The green of spring is around the corner, meaning the green of St. Patrick's Day is upon us.

The balmy forecast is just what the doctor ordered for one local watering hole looking to spruce up its allure. Flint, which opened about a year ago, is half a year overdo opening its swank patio. But then Oklahoma's wicked weather is wont to weasel with the best laid plans of anyone who dares tempt it with outdoor attractions.

The patio portion of the bar at Flint will be host to nightly celebrations from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, including live DJ to go along with the libations that's helped make Flint a go-to stop on Thunder game nights.

The Sobe in OKC is green enough to satisfy any leprechaun and the water and fire features and cozy confines overlooking the Myriad Gardens are a surefire draw with temperatures expected to tickle 80 degrees. Toss in music spun by DJ Brian Frejo to complete the experience.

If you're looking for a more traditional St. Patrick's Day experience, opportunities abound in the Oklahoma City metro.

The two busiest spots in town will be Sean Cummings Irish Pub, 7523 N May Ave., and James E. McNellie's Public House.

Owner/chef Sean Cummings' festivities have become so popular, he's expanded the event to two days. Saturday will be family day with the St. Paddy's Day Great Race of the Great Plains, which begins at 10:15 a.m. on Lake Hefner's East Wharf. The 8k, fun run and leprechaun races will offer plenty of color and pageantry of the Emerald Isle and kid-friendly youth races. For more information go online to

The pub will open at 4 p.m. Saturday, beginning a succession of partying that will take a break only from 2 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday. Cummings will offer a shortened menu, but says it's not unusual to produce seven times the volume of food from the kitchen on the holiday weekend.

Meanwhile, bagpipers and crooners will pass the microphone throughout Sunday as the black-and-tans, properly poured Guinness, Smithwick's and Harp wash down traditional bangers and mash, fish and chips and meat pies.

Over at McNellie's, 1100 N Classen Dr., green-clad crowds will line up early and stay as late as the law allows. McNellie's will serve its house-made corned beef and gallons of Guinness. You won't find green beer at either Sean Cummings or McNellie's.
