Will Oklahoma suffer for actions of its senators?

Published: March 15, 2013

David “Dusty” Martin (Your Views, March 10) commented on the bipartisanship in days of yore. I also long for those days but that was when people on both sides of the aisle had respect for each other and the core issues in government. We know about Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan but we also know something about the past of Chuck Hagel. His past made some people dubious about appointing him as secretary of defense.

Now that he's been confirmed, and knowing the criticism he had faced, it's his duty to prove his detractors wrong. He can do that by keeping our defenses strong as we face dangerous times; he can't go to sleep at the switch. History, as always, will have the last word on Hagel.

The other issue Martin raised was whether President Obama and Hagel would somehow “take it out on Oklahoma” for the actions of our two senators. That wouldn't be wise for two reasons: It would weaken our defenses when you take into consideration the roles our military bases play in the nation's defense and it would only validate how politicized running the Department of Defense has become. Revenge would not be sweet in the long run.
