Sooner Road bridge opens

Sooner Road between Covell and Coffee Creek roads was reopened Friday afternoon after being closed for bridge repairs.

The 87-year-old bridge was shut down in September after state Department of Transportation officials found erosion around the timber supports, said City Engineer Steve Manek.

Redlands Contracting completed the work a month early, Manek said.

It is considered a temporary fix. City officials want to build a new bridge, but there is no money for the project.

The bridge still has a 10-ton weight limit. A new load rating will be calculated by the engineering firm that does Edmond's bridge inspections on the National Bridge Inventory System.

Emergency design work and repairs are expected to cost $297,292.
