The University of Central Oklahoma Department of Design has opened “Sit,” an exhibit featuring cardboard chairs designed and created by students, in the Donna Nigh Gallery on the fourth floor of the Nigh University Center.

First-year design students spent weeks creating the chairs from cardboard and glue, keeping in mind that the chairs must also be functional.

“Students have been asked to consider various aspects of design — ergonomics, size, comfort, form and functionality,” said Ruki Ravikumar, chairman of the design department. “The aesthetic will vary from chair to chair and they will be functional.”

People who visit the exhibit are encouraged to sit in the fully functional cardboard chairs to test the strength of the designs.

The exhibit will be on display through April 2. The Nigh University Center will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, but closed the rest of the week for spring break.

The center reopens on Monday.
