Sports announcers use bad grammar

Who gave sports announcers the grammatical license to refer to all teams as plural when some teams have a name that's singular, as the Thunder or the Heat? We know that a team is made up of several members but it's still a team (singular). For one who learned grammar in the 1930s, it hurts my ears every time I hear, “the Thunder are.” The weather forecasters refer to thunder quite a bit, but they never say “the thunder are loud.” Most families are made up of several members, but we never say “My family are ...” We say, “My family is ...”
