Oklahoma State baseball: Cowboys beat Baylor in Big 12 opener

From Staff Reports Published: March 22, 2013

STILLWATER, Okla. — Jason Hursh worked eight shutout innings, and Zach Fish hit a three-run home run as the Oklahoma State baseball team beat Baylor 5-0 to open Big 12 Conference play on Friday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

Hursh allowed five hits and struck out eight to improve to 3-0 this season while lowering his ERA to 1.04.

“Jason (Hursh) pitched fantastic — he gave us as good a quality start on a Friday night as you could ask for against a very good team — and some good quality at-bats in the middle innings gave us the offense we needed,” OSU coach Josh Holliday said.

OSU junior Brendan McCurry closed out the ninth inning. He gave up a pair of hits but left those runners stranded to seal the win for the Cowboys (19-3, 1-0 Big 12).

Fish went deep in the bottom of the sixth inning off Dillon Newman (3-1) to break open a scoreless tie.

“When I went up there, (Newman) had thrown me five sliders in a row,” Fish said. “He started me off with a slider, which I didn't go for. I was waiting for a fastball away, something I could really drive into the gap. I saw it on the outer half, and I'd seen that pitch a hundred times in batting practice, so it was just staying within myself and going the other way.”

OSU added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.

The Cowboys and Bears (10-13,0-1) continue the series at noon Saturday. The start time was changed due to the possibility of inclement weather.
