ENID — A man who pointed a shotgun at police was fatally shot by an officer Saturday evening, authorities said.
Enid police Capt. Jack Morris said Sunday that Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents were called to investigate the shooting.
OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown said a woman called 911 about 7 p.m. from a home in the 1300 block of N Central. She reported Jimmy Wayne Birchfield, 36, was threatening to kill her. Birchfield also lived at the home.
When Enid officers arrived, the woman came out of the house. Birchfield came to the door and aimed a shotgun outside, prompting an officer to shoot him in the chest, Brown said.
Birchfield was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The officer, whose name was not released, was placed on administrative leave.
When OSBI agents are done with their investigation, they will report to District Attorney Mike Fields, who will determine whether the shooting was justified
