Recruiting: Why fax machines still exist

In a staff meeting Monday morning, I asked a question. Outside of Signing Day for football, who uses a fax machine anymore? I mean, everyone always talks about faxing in these letters of intent.

But when’s the last time you used a fax machine? That’s so 1994.

I had a home fax machine in the 1990s. Used it all the time. Then along came email, and poof!, there went my need for a fax machine. Yet here is the antiquated sport of college football, still relying on faxes.

The Wall Street Journal wrote a cool story today on the fax machine and college football signings:

My boss, Mike Sherman, read it and shipped me an email. “Next time you say something brilliant, let’s do something brilliant with it.” Meaning, don’t just declare the fax machine obsolete except for Signing Day, write about it.
