OU football: Toby Rowland a good hire

Toby Rowland has been hired as the play-by-play radio voice of the Sooners, and it’s a good decision by Joe Castiglione. Rowland will do an excellent job.

Rowland’s play-by-play experience is limited, particularly in football. But the job is more than just radio. Rowland will in many ways be the face of the athletic department. Hosting coaches shows. Emceeing events. Producing video. The pending OU network — which is really a cable channel, I don’t know why it’s called a network — cries out for a productive, sharp guy who can create content and contribute to all kinds of shows. Filling up 24 hours a day, seven days a week, isn’t easy.

Rowland can do it well. Rowland is perfect for that multi-faceted job. He’s a sharp guy. His television work is quality. His radio work (as a show host) is quality. His sideline reporting at football games for both radio and the video board is quality. I’ve worked with the guy at KREF radio. I can attest. Quality, quality, quality.

I suppose Rowland has his critics, but they will soon be gone. This will be a home run hire.

As for the play-by-play on football, here’s what’s needed. Sharp mind. Good eyesight. Solid football knowledge. Good personality. Ability to communicate quickly. Ability to process information quickly.

It’s not rocket science. He’s not operating on kidneys. Rowland will be calling a football game, and he will do it very well. Everything Rowland has done, he’s done well. What makes anyone think he won’t be able to produce top-notch play-by-play? His radio work alone shows he’s more than capable.

Toby Rowland will become a Sooner institution.
