In 1978, horse racing had a Triple Crown winner, Affirmed, for the second straight year, after Seattle Slew in 1977. And that was just a few years after Secretariat (1973).

In 1967, baseball had a Triple Crown winner, Carl Yastrzemski, for the second straight year, after Frank Robinson in 1966. And that was not so long after Mickey Mantle won a Triple Crown in 1956.

Both sports have had their flashes of Triple Crown winners. But both sports are in a drought. Racing now has gone 32 years. Baseball has gone 43 years.

But baseball’s drought has a chance to end, and the National League has two contenders, St. Louis’ Albert Pujols and Cincinnati’s Joey Votto. Which is a problem in and of itself.
