OSU football: Cale Gundy for offensive coordinator?

Here’s a name for Mike Gundy to consider as a replacement for offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen: Little brother.

Why not Cale Gundy, now in his 12th season as the Oklahoma running backs coach?

“Cale won’t leave,” Mike Gundy said Friday. “He’s too set to leave there. I think he’ll stay there forever.”

Mike Gundy said he doesn’t know how much of the Mike Leach/Holgorsen offense Cale Gundy remembers, from the lone season (1999) Leach was at OU. Mike Gundy has said he’d prefer to keep the same offensive style.

And the truth is, Cale Gundy has not been a strategist’s track at OU. Some have wondered why he hasn’t been considered for offensive coordinator with the Sooners. Josh Heupel will be Bob Stoops’ fifth offensive coordinator in 12 seasons — Leach, Mark Mangino, Chuck Long, Kevin Wilson and Heupel — and yet Cale Gundy is in the same position he was upon arrival in 1999.

But Gundy has been a recruiting specialist. Solid coach of the running backs and a recruiting specialist. I don’t know if that’s because he wouldn’t make a good offensive strategist or he’s just really good at the track he’s on. It most definitely could be the latter. Scott Hill was on that same track under Barry Switzer and very likely would have become Switzer’s successor if not for off-field issues that plagued Hill and the program.
