NFL Network: Minor-league telecasts

I’ve watched every NFL Network game this season, and I have a question. Why are the NFL Network telecasts so inferior to CBS’, FOX’s and ESPN’s?

Everything from audio/video sync, timing on commercials, quality of announcers, the NFL Network clearly is a step below the more-established networks. If this was Versus or some flegling network, you could understand it. But the NFL Network? Couldn’t the NFL hire the best technicians in the business? Didn’t the NFL — through NFL Films — already employ some of the best in the business?

So why did a recent NFL Network game break for commercial, without knowing there was a flag on the field that would negate a change of possession? Why did Thursday night, during the Steeler-Panther game, announcers Bob Papa, Joe Theismann and Matt Millen talk at length about a Carolina challenge to a Steeler touchdown, focusing on whether the ball had broken the plane of the goal when caught, when in fact the referee was deciding whether the pass had been caught in the first place and eventually ruled incomplete?

There’s no comparison between an NFL Network game to, say, Sunday Night Football on NBC. The NFL Network is inferior quality, and I just don’t get it.
