Oklahoma football: Beware K-State when Bill Snyder has a quarterback
Kansas State football is back as a national force, and it’s not any great secret why. The Wildcats have a great quarterback in Collin Klein.
Give Bill Snyder a good quarterback, and he’ll give you a good team. Let’s look:
2011: Klein was a monster, rushing for 1,141 yards and throwing 13 TDs, with just six interceptions. The ‘Cats went 10-3.
2010: Carson Coffman, who was decent but not a difference-maker. The ‘Cats went 7-6.
2009: Coffman and Grant Gregory, neither of whom were effective. They combined for six touchdown passes and eight interceptions. The ‘Cats went 6-6.
2005: Allen Webb, who was not effective at all. The ‘Cats went 5-6.
2004: Dylan Meier, who was OK but nothing special. The ‘Cats went 4-7.
2003: Ell Roberson, who was a dynamite player, throwing for 24 TDs and rushing for 975 yards. The ‘Cats went 11-4 and won the Big 12.
2002: Roberson was effective, but not yet an accomplished passer. He rushed for 1,032 yards but threw for just seven TDs. The ‘Cats went 11-2.
2001: Roberson and Marc Dunn, neither of whom were effective. Both completed less than 50 percent of their passes, though Roberson ran for 643 yards. The ‘Cats went 6-6.
2000: Jonathan Beasley, who was solid. Beasley completed just 49.8 percent of his passes, with 17 TDs and 10 interceptions, but ran for 499 yards and 17 TDs. The ‘Cats went 11-3.
1999: Beasley was less effective. He completed just 44.3 percent of his passes, with 14 TDs and seven interceptions, and ran for just 227 yards. The ‘Cats went 11-1.
1998: Michael Bishop, who dang near won the Heisman Trophy for a team that came close to playing for the national championship. The ‘Cats went 11-2.
1997: Bishop was good, but not yet great. He completed just 43.2 percent – Snyder never has held it again a guy for throwing a lot of incompletions – with 13 TDs and eight interceptions. Bishop also ran for 556 yards. The ‘Cats went 11-1.
