College football predictions: Week 4

by Berry Tramel Published: September 20, 2012

College football’s fourth week arrives, and while we don’t have a great slate of games, the pool is going deeper. Come October, we’ll be set.

Kansas State at Oklahoma: Sooners 34-23. Remember the days when KSU would sell its home to OU? The Sooners and Wildcats played five straight years at Owen Field, 1988 through 1992. But in 1993, Bill Snyder finally had himself a ballteam, and the ‘Cats beat a good OU team 21-7 at Manhattan.

Brigham Young at Boise State: Cougars 17-16. Upset special. Truth is, Boise State’s offense isn’t what it has been. There’s talk of BYU joining the Big East. What a shame all those cool Rocky Mountain Time Zone schools can’t get along and have a great Mountain West Conference.

Baylor at Louisiana-Monroe: Bears 34-28. What a great story are Warhawks, who dang near led the SEC West after winning at Arkansas in overtime, then losing to Auburn in overtime. If this one goes overtime, watch out Art Briles. I don’t think Todd Berry’s ordering up a field goal in OT.

Clemson at Florida State: Seminoles 26-21. Everyone says Florida State is back. I’ll believe it when I see it. But I do think Jimbo Fisher has a good team. So does Dabo Swinney.

Temple at Penn State: Nittany Lions 17-13. Who’s the best team in Pennsylvania? Pitt is shaky. Penn State’s shaky. Temple’s so-so since Al Golden went to Miami.

Maryland at West Virginia: Mountaineers 56-22. Man, I wish West Virginia had dumped this game and kept the Florida State series.

Texas-El Paso at Wisconsin: Badgers 26-7. Bret Bielema can’t seem to keep a coaching staff together, and you’ve got to wonder if Wisconsin can beat out Purdue, Illinois and Indiana for that Used-to-be-Leaders Division in the Big Ten.

Vanderbilt at Georgia: Bulldogs 34-14. Vandy still might be decent. The Commodores have two acceptable losses — close calls against South Carolina in Nashville and at Northwestern.

Rutgers at Arkansas: Razorbacks 28-20. I almost picked the Scarlet Knights. But if Tyler Wilson plays, Arkansas should win. He’s at least an adult. Nobody else in Fayetteville seems to be.

Fresno State at Tulsa: Golden Hurricane 34-31. Tim DeRuyter is doing a nice job with the Bulldogs. They played tough at Oregon, then routed Colorado.

Kansas at Northern Illinois: Jayhawks 23-21. Big 12 upset special. NIU is the better team, but there’s always pressure on the Mid-American Conference team. It’s about time KU produced under Charlie Weis.

Arizona at Oregon: Ducks 66-24. Hey, here’s a good question. Who will the Pac-12 officials pull for in this one?

Miami at Georgia Tech: Yellowjackets 24-13. Is it possible that the entire ACC stinks, except for the two teams playing in Tallahassee on Saturday night?

Oregon State at UCLA: Bruins 29-21. I don’t believe in UCLA. Don’t believe in the Bruins at all. But that doesn’t mean they won’t win a bunch of games.

Virginia at TCU: Horned Frogs 28-14. TCU quarterback Casey Pachall leads the nation in quarterback rating.

California at Southern Cal: Trojans 52-25. Golden Bears missed a golden chance last week at Ohio State. Not likely to get that opportunity this week.

LSU at Auburn: Bayou Bengals 27-16. Are we headed for another LSU-Alabama exhibition that’s a prelude to an LSU-Bama national title game? Someone needs to take care of this national disaster.

Missouri at South Carolina: Gamecocks 19-14. Lose this game, and Mizzou is two games behind in the SEC East, having lost to its two chief rivals.

Michigan at Notre Dame: Wolverines 28-27. Upset special. Notre Dame is headed for a special season, but Michigan isn’t ready to roll over. The last three Michigan-Notre Dame games have been decided by four points each.

Utah at Arizona State: Sun Devils 26-14. You would think names like Utah and Arizona State would be a boon to an organization like the Pac-12 South. But no.

Army at Wake Forest: Demon Deacons 41-16. Wouldn’t it be great if Army could get good in football again? Alas, it is not to be.

South Florida at Ball State: Bulls 30-28. David Letterman’s alma mater knocked off Indiana last week and is capable of doing the same to USF.

Colorado at Washington State: Cougars 49-20. I wish Mike Leach was back in the Big 12. The only thing I miss about Colorado is the view from the Folsom Field pressbox.

Connecticut at Western Michigan: Broncos 27-21. This is sort of a KU-Northern Illinois game, only UConn is better than Kansas and Northern Illinois is better than Western Michigan.

Syracuse at Minnesota: Orange 33-20. Two schools that regret firings. Syracuse should never have cut loose Paul Pasqualoni, Minnesota should have held on to Glen Mason.

New Mexico at New Mexico State: Lobos 37-31. New Mexico State is favored in this game. By 71/2 points. That’s crazy.

Louisiana Tech at Illinois: Illini 40-24. Illinois is favored by one point. A Big Ten school, at home, is favored by one point over a team from the WAC. And Illinois isn’t even close to the worst team in the Big Ten.

Last week: 18-10. Season: 57-22.
