College football predictions: Week 12
College football’s 12th week has arrived, it’s a relative dud. After the showdowns of Nov. 3, and the big upsets of Nov. 10, and before the traditional rivalries of Thanksgiving weekend, we’ve got this mediocre round of games. Let’s commence:
Oklahoma at West Virginia: Sooners 48-38. I saw the Mountaineers live last week. Just too many mistakes in the kicking game and not enough players on defense.
Texas Tech at Oklahoma State: Cowboys 48-38. Red Raiders haven’t won in Stillwater since 2001.
Kansas State at Baylor: Wildcats 51-28. Last year, K-State puts the skids on Robert Griffin III’s Heisman campaign. But that was early in the season, and RG3 got back in the saddle. Now, the tables have turned. Baylor tries to knock Collin Klein off his Heisman horse.
Iowa State at Kansas: Jayhawks 20-17. Kansas has been playing better. Could have beaten OSU in Lawrence. Should have beaten Texas there.
Ole Miss at LSU: Tigers 28-12. Hugh Freeze has done a nice job at Ole Miss, but the Rebs have to beat LSU or Mississippi State next week to make a bowl.
Syracuse at Missouri: Tigers 28-21. Mizzou, too, is struggling to be bowl eligible. The 5-5 Tigers have to win here or next week at Texas A&M to go bowling. Syracuse also is 5-5. It has Temple next week.
Arkansas at Mississippi State: Bulldogs 24-23. The 4-6 Razorbacks have to beat Miss State, then upset LSU to make a bowl. Crazier things have happened.
Tennessee at Vanderbilt: Commodores 29-28. Volunteers are 4-6; they have to win in Nashville, then beat hapless Kentucky to make a bowl. Meanwhile, Vandy is in and could be headed for a great year, since Wake Forest is next. The Commodores have reached eight wins only once (1982) since 1955.
Western Carolina at Alabama: Crimson Tide 59-7. You’re not going to believe the rest of the SEC schedule. Six games against I-AA opponents. Starting with this bloodbath.
Jacksonville State at Florida: Gators 35-6. You thought I was kidding? Those SEC showdowns in September were cool, but here’s where we pay the piper.
Georgia Southern at Georgia: Bulldogs 39-14. At least Georgia is keeping the money in-state.
Alabama A&M at Auburn: Tigers 55-14. No way Gene Chizik can win. Play Bama A&M close, and it’s more indictment of a rotten season. Rout Bama A&M, and Auburn is picking on a little guy en route to a winless conference season.
Wofford at South Carolina: Gamecocks 48-14. I’ll cut South Carolina, Georgia and Florida a little slack. All have tough non-conference games next week.
Sam Houston State at Texas A&M: Aggies 58-22. Didn’t take A&M long to figure out the SEC plot. Now, if the Ags could just talk Texas into playing on Thanksgiving again.
Southern Cal at UCLA: Bruins 38-34. This is for the Pac-12 South title. Winner gets to go play Oregon in Eugene. Good luck with that.
Stanford at Oregon: Ducks 48-21. What a season for Oregon. But what a road trip to the Big Bowl. All the way down in Miami.
California at Oregon State: Beavers 23-17. A dream season for Oregon State. Mike Riley has to be on the short list for national coach of the year.
Washington at Colorado: Huskies 48-30. The Rick Neuheisel Bowl. Strange. Neuheisel has head coached 25 percent of the Pac-12 schools.
