Air-conditioner units at three schools in the Oklahoma City School District were destroyed this month, with the damage estimated at $750,000, according to a police report.

The units were destroyed between March 13 and 18 at Moon Academy, 1901 NE 13; Oklahoma Centennial, 1301 NE 101; and Classen School of Advanced Studies, 1901 N Ellison, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 235-7300.

School district spokeswoman Tierney Tinnin said thieves go to great lengths to steal the copper inside the air conditioner units. Copper is currently selling in Oklahoma City for nearly $3 a pound.

“People who are willing to get electrocuted aren't really going to let things like fences and locks stop them,” she said. “Our best line of defense is just to have people keep a watch and call. The money is coming out of taxpayers' pockets.”

Tinnin said the units were scheduled to be replaced during MAPS renovations.

Recyclers who purchase copper are required to get a copy of the seller's drivers license and take down the vehicle tag number, according to Oklahoma state law.
