OU’s Jerry Schmidt critical of Trent Williams work ethic

Former University of Oklahoma offensive tackle Trent Williams is introduced to Washington media after the Redskins slected Williams with the fourth pick in the NFL Draft.

Washington Redskins first-round pick Trent Williams got a hot-and-cold report from OU strength coach Jerry Schmidt this week.

The Washington Post got a hold of Schmidt and asked him to address concerns over Williams’ work ethic.

“He’s one of those guys, he’s definitely not a gym rat. If he was, there wouldn’t be anybody even close to him,” Schmidt told the Post. “If he really committed himself, it wouldn’t even be close. He’d be the best ever. That’s how much talent he’s got. There’s a lot of talent there that he just hasn’t tapped.

Schmidt went on to say that Williams could make the Pro Bowl “as many times as he wants”, but that he just has to assert himself, something it doesn’t sound like he did while in Norman.

I think its Win, Win. By Patton saying it is accepting fault. Should motivate Trent and make him work much harder then everyone is happy, or the truth shall reveal it's ugly head.

"No comment" would have worked just fine. Schmidt didn't have to make his comments public. He's angry that someone who didn't follow his training regimen got drafted #4. This isn't anything about making sure that the Skins know about Trent's work ethic. This is a middle-aged man with a short-guy's complex getting payback on someone who didn't do it his way.

Why blame the strength coach. Trent williams only did 20 reps with 225 at the combine. Okung did 37. When I was 40 yrs old I did 20 reps with that weight. Obviously he hasn't put the time in the weight room. Should the strength coach say thank you for not working hard.

Jerry Schmidt is a public-relations disaster for the Sooner program. He behaves like a jackarse on the sidelines, drives off good players who get crosswise with him (and apparently it doesn't take much to do that), belittles other players for things he doesn't seem to understand, like sickle-cell anemia, and now he publicly runs his mouth about a player who just got drafter #4.
