Carter wins Wooden award

Oklahoma safety Quinton Carter was named the winner of the seventh annual Wooden Citizenship Cup, an award presented annually by the Atlanta-based Athletes For a Better World.
An award that features athletes in all sports, Carter also was previously named to the American Football Coaches Association 11-member Good Works Team in honor of his community service.
The Wooden Cup is named in honor of John Wooden, the late UCLA basketball coaching legend. The cup recognizes athletes whose character represents the highest and best in sport, who make the greatest difference in the lives of others.
Carter, a Las Vegas native, has served the SOUL Organization, Norman Kindercare, the Oklahoma City Marathon, the University Center for Student Advancement and the OU Black Graduate Student Association.
Currently in Mobile, Ala., preparing for Saturday’s Senior Bowl, Carter was OU’s third-leading tackler in 2010 with a career-high 96. He also had four interceptions.
Projected to be selected in the NFL Draft in April, Carter is the second OU athlete to receive the award. Cross country runner Jackie Dubois was cited in 2003.
OU football player Jacob Gutierrez was a finalist that same year. Another Sooner football player, Carl Pendleton, was a finalist in 2007.
