Who will be No. 1? OU or Alabama

The Associated Press poll is viewed by most as the definitive college football rating. The AP preseason poll will not be released for another month in mid-August.

Based on other preseason ratings it’s apparent Oklahoma and Alabama probably will be ranked 1-2. It’s simply a question of whether the Sooners or Crimson Tide will be No. 1.

Reseraching 10 preseason rankings OU is listed No. 1 four times followed by Alabama (three), LSU (two) and Florida State (one).

The Seminoles, who host OU Sept. 17 in a high profile game with national title implications, are listed in the top 10 by nearly every publication/website. But Fox Sports listing FSU No. 1 was surprising.

OU has been ranked No. 1 preseason nine times by AP, once in the Bob Stoops era (2003).

Four of the nine times (1956, 1974, 1975, 1985) the Sooners won the national title.

Listed below are the preseason No. 1 from various publications:

Athlon — Alabama
Bleacher Report — Oklahoma
Blue Ribbon — Oklahoma
CBSSportsline — LSU
ESPN — Oklahoma
Fox Sports — Florida State
Lindy’s — Oklahoma
Phil Steele — Alabama
Sporting News — LSU
USA Today — Alabama
