Selected No. 1 in the preseason Associated Press poll released on Saturday, Oklahoma will try to end a recent trend.

Over the past 10 seasons, only one team ranked No. 1 in preseason has won the national title — USC in 2004. The Trojans went wire to wire that season but vacated their title earlier this year because of NCAA rules violations committed by former tailback Reggie Bush.

The Sooners received 36 of 60 first-place votes. OU starts out No. 1 in the AP poll for the 10th time, more than any program in the country.

Oklahoma State is ranked No. 9 in the preseason poll, one spot behind Texas A&M, one spot in front of Nebraska.

Alabama is ranked No. 2. Oregon is ranked No. 3 followed by LSU and Boise State.

Florida State, which hosts the Sooners on Sept. 17, opens the season ranked No. 6.

Missouri is the fourth team from the Big 12 in the poll. The Tigers are ranked No. 21.
