Spring game format changed

The past three years Oklahoma coaches drafted teams and played a red versus white game. A handful of players played for both teams. This year it would require too much crossover which is why Saturday’s 2 p.m. game will revert back to an offense versus defense format.

Numbers are slightly down due to transfers, a fairly large departing senior class and some injuries. Numbers, though, will be normal this summer when the large 2012 class arrives.

“I don’t think it’s feasible to go two opposite teams without a ton of guys shuffling back and forth,” said coach Bob Stoops.

What’s undecided is a formula to award points for the offense and defense for scoreboard purposes.
Four years ago in a similar format, the defense scored three touchdowns and forced six turnovers to dominate 69-40.

In the 2008 spring game, the offense received one point for a first down, one point for an extra point, two points for any play longer than 30 yards, three points for a field goal and six points for a touchdown.
The defense received one point for a stop, two points for holding the offense to three plays and a punt, two points for a fourth-down stop, three points for a turnover and nine points for a touchdown.
