NORMAN — Much of the buzz surrounding Oklahoma’s offense has centered around true freshman wide receiver Trey Metoyer, who fans have been waiting to see since he signed back in February 2011.

But Metoyer is impressed with another newcomer to the Sooners’ offense: sophomore tight end Geneo Grissom who, until the start of the summer, was a defensive end.

“Geneo is a big help,” Metoyer said. “He’s a big guy; he’s got hands probably the size of mine, and he can run.

“I say that’s a freak. We really need him.”

Grissom requested the position switch after realizing it was his best chance to get on the field. The Sooners had strong depth at defensive end, but were thin at tight end.

Coach Bob Stoops declared Grissom OU’s first-team tight end last week, although position coach Bruce Kittle tempered that a bit, saying the competition with Brannon Green and Taylor McNamara was ongoing.

Grissom has battled some injuries through his Sooner career; a stress fracture in one foot forced him to redshirt as a true freshman, and then another stress fracture, in his other foot, cost him valuable repetitions in workouts this spring. He said he feels fine now, though.
