NFL preseason update: Jerry Rice talks Dez Bryant
By Anthony Slater – Aslater@opubco.com - @anthonyVslater
It’s the fourth – and final – week of the preseason, which means most players who matter likely won’t play. Especially ones from this state. The Cowboys face Miami on Wednesday night, but Dez Bryant will rest. Same goes for Brandon Weeden in Cleveland and Adrian Peterson for the Vikings.
Even the ones that do get a little run, shoulder pads will come off mid-way through the first quarter.
So I’m not going to preview the most meaningless week of the NFL season. I’d rather give you some more pertinent information on some of the former OU and OSU star wide receivers.

-Dez Bryant
Quick look: If you’ve somehow yet to hear, the Cowboys have set up some strict guidelines for the oft-troubled receiver. And early reports say Bryant has responded well to Jerry Jones’ babysitting tactics (key word: early). Other than that, Bryant is recovered from a minor knee tweak and expected to start in next Wednesday’s season opener against the New York Giants.
Quote: Everyone seems to have an opinion on the former OSU star. Here’s one that should be respected, from NFL Hall of Fame wideout Jerry Rice, giving his advice to Bryant:
“Basically, you have to conduct yourself off the field as you would on it. The guy is a talented player, we know that, but the Cowboys right now, what they’re saying, is this is your last chance. If he doesn’t rise to the occasion now, he might not be a Cowboy. But you look at this guy, he’s only 23. My son is 21 and he does things at times that blows me away. But Dez Bryant is one of those guys that can really help this offense…In three years, he’s going to be a free agent. We all try to get in position for that long term contract, and I think right now, with that team, they are a little hesitant (to extend), but if he doesn’t have any incidents, I’m sure he’ll get his long-term contracts.” – Rice on SportsCenter
