EL PASO, Texas — We’re two hours away from the season opener between No. 4 Oklahoma and UTEP, which is set to kick off at 9:30 p.m. central time inside Sun Bowl Stadium.

TWO INTERESTING FACTS

2. Landry Jones can tie Holieway’s win total tonight

Jones continues his impressive climb toward owning every Oklahoma career passing records. With a win tonight, he ties national-title winner Jamelle Holieway for second on the list of career wins by OU quarterbacks. Then he’d be two behind Steve Davis’ record of 32. He’s already the OU career leader in passing yards (12,379), touchdown passes (93), pass completions (1,021) and pass attempts (1,628). He’s fourth on the list of completion percentage with a .627 mark, behind Sam Bradford, Josh Heupel and Jason White.

1. UTEP has a rough history vs. Big 12 and ranked teams

UTEP hasn’t beaten a team currently in the Big 12 Conference since Nov. 15, 1997, when it topped TCU 24-17. The Horned Frogs were a WAC team at the time. Since then, the Miners have lost 13 straight games to teams now in the Big 12. In games against teams that were, at that time, Big 12 members, UTEP is 0-11 and has been outscored by a total of 499-162. The Miners are also 4-48 all-time against AP Top 25 teams, including a 1-13 mark against teams ranked in the AP’s Top 10. The only win came on Oct. 26, 1985 against No. 7 BYU.
