Chuka Ndulue talks about Saturday night’s punt mishaps

For my Insider on Monday, I wrote about the mistakes on special teams. I talked with Gabe Ikard on Saturday and was able to talk to Chuka Ndulue Monday evening. Ikard used to block on the punt for the past two years. Ndulue was one of the three blockers on the first punt that ended up being blocked. Ikard came in for the second punt and then Ndulue played the position the rest of the night. He explained.

What happened on that first punt?

What happened was I just didn’t communicate loud enough for everyone to hear. It was my first time being out there. I didn’t know that as a bear I could walk around. I t hought once I get set, I can’t really move. If I would have known that I would have been up to the line. That was just what happened. I wasn’t aware that I could move around back there.

Did they tell you that when you came to the sideline?

After that happened, they told me non the sideline that I could move around and make the checks with everyone so I can make sure everyone else hears it.

Did it go okay the rest of the night?

The rest of the night went very well. After that I was settled and I was ready to go.

Are you prepared now for the punt team?

I like it back there. It’s fun just having someone running full speed at you and trying to knock you off your feet. You’ve got to be ready. It’s pretty fun playing. Just getting out on the field as much as I can. I enjoy that.
