In 1999, Bob Stoops signed a football for Sterling Shepard, ‘A future #3 Sooner’

NORMAN — The positive response to my story in Saturday’s Oklahoman has been overwhelming and very much appreciated.

I really enjoyed reporting and writing the story of Sterling Shepard’s relationship with Bob Stoops and how it began.

There was one other aspect of the story that I couldn’t fit in, and I thought I’d share that here.

In 1999, Stoops’ first season on the job and not long after Derrick Shepard died, the coach signed a football for 6-year old Sterling, and that ball has stayed on a shelf in Sterling’s bedroom ever since.

Of course, Sterling did actually become No. 3 for the Sooners, just like his dad.
