Bob Stoops pleased with on-field leadership
“I am pleased with it,” Stoops said at his Monday press conference. “And I want to defend even Blake and Landry. They didn’t, they’re not out there lackadaisical. They’re not doing that on purpose, to drop the football. It’s something that happened.
“I’m sure they’re disappointed about it but hey, we’ve got to come back. In the end, again, I am pleased with the leadership. I think our guys have worked hard and I thought they played hard the other night. We just couldn’t overcome that, their mistakes. But they’re good kids. They work hard. Again, they weren’t out there being lackadaisical about it. It hurts them. But we’ve got to move forward.”
Landry Jones took the podium after Stoops and he was also asked about on-field leadership.
Here was the question: With so many young players and first year players on the team, how do you think they are watching you handle this situation?
“I think they’re watching me some, just being the leader on this team,” Jones said. “I don’t know if “look up to me” is necessarily the right word or anything like that but I guess they’re looking to me just to kind of see where we’re going with this offense and find out what we’re going to be. We’ve been in this position before and have come out with a whole lot of good seasons.”
After Oklahoma’s loss to Kansas State, both center Gabe Ikard and wide receiver Sterling Shepard commented positively on their quarterback’s leadership. Fullback Trey Millard said he feels like Jones brings a certain kind of calming factor to the team during play, especially on the sideline and in the huddle. So what is Landry Jones going to have to do to get his team back on track during the second and final bye week for the Sooners?
“It starts with this week in practice,” Millard said. “It’s coming in and demanding the best from us. It’s just moving on and
focusing on some mistakes first and correcting them and continuing to correct things, just improve.”
